A Long-Awaited Redevelopment

Blackwattle Bay in Pyrmont has been the heart of Sydney's fish market since 1966, serving as the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. In the past, fresh fish enthusiasts would gather around auctioneers, proudly displaying seafood samples, with the produce going to the highest bidder.

However, concerns about the market's deteriorating condition had been raised before the NSW Liberal government announced the redevelopment in 2016. The project faced budget blowouts, with the original $250 million budget increasing to a staggering $836 million by the time it was completed.

What's New Under the Canopy?

The new market, housed under a vast 200-metre-wide canopy roof, is approximately 20% larger than its predecessor. Operating hours have been extended, with the market now open until 10 pm to accommodate the expected influx of visitors.

Location and Accessibility

The new fish market has been built on a wharf adjacent to the existing site, which is now slated for residential redevelopment. Parking is limited, and traffic is expected to be heavy, so authorities recommend using public transport when visiting.

The old Fish Market light rail stop has been renamed Bank Street, and commuters are advised to get off at Wentworth Park, located about 400m away. Approximately $40 million will be invested in accessibility upgrades at Wentworth Park, including new lifts, ramps, lighting, and CCTV.

The L1 Dulwich Hill Line has added 150 weekly services to accommodate the increased demand. Evening services will be more frequent, with trams running every 10 minutes from 7 pm to 9 pm, Sunday to Thursday, and between 7 pm and 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Bus routes 389 and 501, serving Pyrmont and Ultimo, will continue to provide access to the new site. Additionally, $30 million has been allocated to build a commuter wharf at Blackwattle Bay, supported by a ferry service connecting the new fish market to Barangaroo.

The ferry service is still in the design phase and is not expected to commence until 2027.
